Torque calculations

Hi Sarah,

Torque questions can be really tricky to get your head around. I would always recommend starting by carefully labelling your diagram with the location and sizes of forces. Then choose a pivot - in this case you are told to use point B as your pivot. Then state the two conditions for equilibrium:

The sum of the clockwise torques = the sum of the anticlockwise torques
The sum of the forces upwards = the sum of the forces downwards

The points above often get you some credit, even if you struggle with the calculations involved in getting a final correct answer.
